Kotahitanga and Be Māori

These powerful words from the late Kingi Tūheitia resonate deeply as we collectively farewell our King. The Taumarunui Community Kokiri Trust embraces this message as we look toward the future, honouring the legacy of Kingi Tūheitia and the immense mahi he dedicated to Te Iwi Māori.

Today, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for his leadership and vision, and we warmly welcome our new Kuīni Ngā Wai Hono i te Pō.

He mihi nui ki a koe e te Kuīni. Together, let us continue to move forward in unity and strength.

Join Us for Prostate Cancer Awareness Evening!

Kia ora whānau! We invite you to an important information evening on Friday, 27th September, from 6 PM to 10 PM at the Taumarunui RSA. This event aims to raise awareness about prostate cancer, the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Aotearoa (after skin cancers).

Did you know that over 4000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, and it’s the second leading cause of cancer deaths in men? While Māori men have a slightly lower diagnosis rate, they face higher death rates, often due to later diagnoses and treatment options.

As men age, the risk increases, especially if they have a family history of prostate cancer. Join us to learn more about this crucial issue and how early detection can lead to better outcomes.

Together, we can support our whānau and raise awareness.

See you there! #ProstateCancerAwareness #TaumarunuiKokiriTrust #WhānauFirst

Kia Piki Te Ora - Suicide Prevention Strategy Launch

On Tuesday, the Taumarunui Community Kokiri Trust was proud to host the launch of the Maniapoto/Taumarunui Suicide Prevention Strategy during International Suicide Prevention Week. Our day was filled with kōrero, a free sausage sizzle, and plenty of hugs shared with our beautiful community.

This new strategy, called Aaio (meaning peace), was developed over the past 11 months by a group of whānau with lived experiences of suicide, with the support of our Trust and Hinengakau Matua Whangai. It aims to create safe spaces where whānau can talk about the effects of whakamomori (suicide) and attempted suicide, using the power of pūrākau and a Te Ao Māori lens to guide healing.

We saw an amazing show of kotahitanga on Tuesday, with many people stopping by to offer aroha, share their own experiences, and acknowledge the importance of this kaupapa. It was heartwarming to see the community come together, with people surprised, grateful, and thankful for the work we are doing.

Our young people are going through so much, and events like these give us the chance to spread support and understanding. Together, we can aspire to inspire – making a difference for our tamariki and future generations.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support this kaupapa and shared in the aroha. Together, we will continue to work towards a safer, more connected community.
